The monsoon has returned and the 2021 Monsoon season is upon us! Given the recent storms throughout northern and central Arizona, we feel the first weekend in August will be a perfect opportunity to go take a look around. 

We will be hosting an Arizona Mushroom Society foray for you to join us to hike through the woods to look for and identify wild mushroom species. This is a great educational opportunity to find and learn about our local mycoflora. There is no charge for this event. It is available for Arizona Mushroom Society members to register until we reach capacity. Only registered members can participate.

This foray event is separate from the Mushroom feast planned for the evening of the 7th. To attend both events, you must register for both separately.

Please only register if you are sure you can attend. Spaces are limited and cancellations often mean other people cannot attend. Registrants can include one guest. Children over 5 years old may attend and must be under supervision of their parent(s) at all times. Dogs must be well-behaved and on-leash during the event. This event includes hiking at high elevation, sometimes in areas with heavy downed logs and debris, which can be difficult for children, dogs, and many of us as well!

Summer forays are a valuable opportunity to learn about our local mycoflora, and while edibles are likely to be found it is not the goal of the foray. If you are interested in learning about local mushrooms, and have the time and transportation for you to attend, here is a chance for you.

Those registered will need to meet at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 7th at the Clints Well gas station, at the corner of Lake Mary Road and Highway 87. All participants should make sure they have at least a half tank of gas and have a vehicle equipped for forest roads with gravel and native surfaces. All roads used during the foray will be accessible by standard, low-clearance vehicles.

Please be sure to come to the event prepared for summer monsoon season in the high mountains. You will need hiking boots, sunscreen, water, rain gear, and basic first aid supplies. Plan to bring a lunch and snacks and a lot of water. There are no other stores or commerce opportunities once we depart from the Clints Well gas station. Please be sure to bring a trusty knife and netted or paper bags or baskets for collecting mushrooms.
