SCIENTIFIC COMMITTEE PAGE

MISSION

This committee is responsible for recording a genus and species list of mushrooms found at forays. It arranges and identifies any fungi on display at Society meetings, fairs, or other events. The Scientific Committee is the primary liaison for the Poison Control Center and the state medical and veterinary communities, when and if experts in mushroom identification and toxicity are requested. It is also the primary liaison for professional mycologists and other bona fide scientific researchers who wish to enlist the assistance of the Members of this Society. It will assist the Culinary Committee with establishing fungal species white-lists and safety protocols for mushroom consumption.

2022 Chair: Terri Clements

COLLECTING FOR THE GILBERTSON HERBARIUM

As part of our commitment to better understand the mycological communities in Arizona, the Arizona Mushroom Society is encouraging interested members to collect specimens for the Gilbertson Herbarium at The University of Arizona. Click here for details on how to procure and save specimens for the collection.

LATEST SCIENTIFIC COMMITTEE NEWS

As many of you may know AMS has an annual budget dedicated to documenting Arizona mycoflora using molecular analysis aka DNA sequencing.  I have developed a Sequencing Protocol for those of you who are interested in participating:  Sequencing Protocol.doc

Also attached is a copy of the presentation I gave on this topic at AMS White Mountain Foray:  Mapping AZ Fungi.doc  The spreadsheet I reference is a work in progress that is continually updated on http://www.mushroomobserver.org.  Search for species list 1309.
