How to Learn and Contribute to AZ Fungi 🍄‍🟫 February 19, 2026

This is a recorded Zoom in which Brent Ewasiuk and Mike Dechter share about tools including iNaturalist and Mushroom Observer you can use to both better identify local fungi (plants and animals too) and contribute to our scientific knowledge of what mushrooms and fungi can be found in Arizona.

Brent and Mike discuss how to use the iNaturalist and Mushroom Observer apps to document fungi specimens that can be DNA sequenced and identified through phylogenetic analysis. iNaturalist is a key part of the process to electronically record fungi specimens that are found (by anyone) and then submitted for DNA sequencing. If you want to be part of that process or see the results of several years of hard work by AMS program lead Terri Clements, check out this recording!

Fungal Study of the Saguaro Cactus with Danika Thiele

October 5, 2024

In 2024, Danika Thiele was awarded the Dr. Chester Leathers Graduate Scholarship to support her research into fungal relationships with Saguaro Cacti. She is specifically looking into how changes such as from wildfire and invasive species affect the presence and relationship between arbuscular mycorrhizae and Saguaros. Danika generously offered to share more information about her research with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi

on Saguaro cacti and talk about some of the preliminary findings of her work.

DIY Mushroom Grow Bags

March 31, 2022

This is a training led by Chad Borseth with help from Ray Younghans. They walk you through the process of assembling the grow bags and share basic fruiting instructions. Chad will also be sharing information about tissue transfer and grain spawn transfer.

This class uses the non-sterile method, which has proven very effective for growing oyster mushrooms on pelletized newspaper and guinea pig or rabbit food (yes, these are the actual supplies used for the substrate). It is non-sterile, so your substrate will not need to be sanitized or otherwise treated prior to inoculation. The non-sterile method works very well with more aggressive strains, particularly Pleurotus species such as pearl or phoenix oysters.
