We've received some rare spring storms and have enjoyed cooler than usual weather through April. While rare in Arizona, it has created good conditions for the fruiting of burn morels in the mountainous areas of the State.

Due to this good fortune and our amazing members, we are planning to hold a snap foray for morels in the Flagstaff Area on Thursday, May 9th, 12pm - 4pm. This will be a small group foray for educational purposes of looking for fruiting morels in habitat. 

We plan to look for morels in a recently scouted area, where some of the first burn morels of the season were found. The purpose is for participants to learn the key indicators of burn morel habitat. Hopefully we will find one or more mushrooms, however, you will surely learn a great deal about what to look for this upcoming season.

This foray will require meeting in Flagstaff, AZ and driving for up to an hour on dirt roads to the foray location. High clearance vehicles are recommended, although not absolutely necessary. Carpooling from the meet-up location will be encouraged.

This foray involves more rugged terrain and steep slopes than our usual summer mushroom forays.  Please only register if you are able to hike on steep slopes through some areas of heavy downed logs or brush.

This event is free, however, you must be registered to attend this event. Please only register if you are certain you can attend. Successful registrations will immediately receive an email with information on where to meet up. AMS members are able to register and include up to one guest. Given the difficult conditions, children under 15 are not recommended for this event. Dogs must be on leashes at all times.

Our forays fill up fast. We often hear from people who are disappointed with the short notice or timing of the event. Snap forays include short timeframes and allow us to take advantage of evolving conditions to setup a quick event. This allows for more overall opportunities for AMS members.
